The Delta State Police Command has arrested Emmanuel Umukoro for allegedly killing and burning his mother, Fatima Umukoro, a school proprietor, in Warri, the commercial and oil base of the state.
The tragic incident occurred late on Saturday night, September 7, and has left the community deeply shaken.
Residents, who chose to remain anonymous, described the scene as extremely gruesome and horrifying.
An eyewitness, identified only as Umoh, observed that the gate of the Umukoro residence was unusually left open around 10 p.m., prompting neighbors and passersby to investigate.
He said, “When neighbours checked on the residence of the Umukoro late that night, they were shocked to discover fire coming from inside the house with the door left open. Upon entering the house, they found the lifeless body of Mrs. Umukoro, burnt beyond recognition.
“We saw her son, Emmanuel Umukoro, earlier driving out of the compound around 8:30 pm at a high speed in his mother’s car.”
On Sunday, September 8, Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident when contacted for comment.
He said, “The son is in police custody now but cannot say whether he’s the one who killed her until an investigation is concluded.”
